Help/Interwiki linking
About this page
Some properties in Metabase link to pages on Wikimedia wikis. For these properties, write the link as an interwiki link instead of a full URL. This page explains how to write interwiki links and lists the most useful prefixes.
Which properties use interwiki links?
- described at Wikimedia-page (P11)
- A Wikimedia page that describes the item, for example a project page or an event page.
- full work available at Wikimedia page (P45)
- A Wikimedia page that contains the item itself, for example a guide or a report published as a wiki page.
If the page is not on a Wikimedia wiki, use a full URL with one of these properties instead:
- described at URL (P12): a website that describes the item
- full work available at URL (P44): a web page that contains the full item
What is an interwiki link?
An interwiki link is a short way to point to a page on another wiki. It has two parts:
- a prefix that says which wiki the page is on, followed by a colon
- the page title, exactly as it appears on that wiki
For example, :sv:Stockholm points to the article Stockholm on Swedish Wikipedia.
Interwiki links are shorter and easier to read than full URLs, and they do not break if the way a wiki builds its URLs changes.
How to write an interwiki link
- Open the page you want to link to.
- Look at the web address. The part before
/wiki/tells you which wiki it is. The part after/wiki/is the page title. - Find the prefix for that wiki in the lists below.
- Write a colon, the prefix, a colon, and the page title.
Keep these rules in mind:
- Do not include
https://or the domain name. - Do not put the link in square brackets.
- Include the namespace if the page has one, for example
Wikipedia:,Commons:orProjekt:. - Write special characters such as å, ä and ö as normal letters. If the address shows codes like
%C3%A5, copy the title from the page heading instead.
Examples

Common prefixes
Many wikis have both a long and a short prefix, for example :commons: and :c:. Both work, but many people prefer using the long prefix, because they find it easier to read.
Wikipedia
For Wikipedia, use the language code of the language version. Some examples:
:en:English Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org):sv:Swedish Wikipedia (sv.wikipedia.org):de:German Wikipedia (de.wikipedia.org):fr:French Wikipedia (fr.wikipedia.org):es:Spanish Wikipedia (es.wikipedia.org):fi:Finnish Wikipedia (fi.wikipedia.org):no:Norwegian (Bokmål) Wikipedia (no.wikipedia.org):nn:Norwegian (Nynorsk) Wikipedia (nn.wikipedia.org):da:Danish Wikipedia (da.wikipedia.org):pl:Polish Wikipedia (pl.wikipedia.org):simple:Simple English Wikipedia (simple.wikipedia.org)
The language code is the first part of the address. For example, the address of Czech Wikipedia starts with cs.wikipedia.org, so the prefix is :cs:.
Watch out for these:
:se:is Northern Sami Wikipedia, not Swedish. Use:sv:for Swedish Wikipedia and:wmse:for the Wikimedia Sverige wiki.
Other language-based Wikimedia projects
These projects have one version per language. On its own, each prefix points to the English version. For another language, add the language code after the prefix.
:wiktionary:Wiktionary. Example::wiktionary:sv:bibliotek:wikisource:Wikisource:wikibooks:Wikibooks:wikiquote:Wikiquote:wikinews:Wikinews:wikiversity:Wikiversity:wikivoyage:Wikivoyage
These wikis have only one version, so you do not need a language code.
:commons:Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org):meta:Meta-Wiki (meta.wikimedia.org):wikidata:Wikidata (www.wikidata.org):wikifunctions:Wikifunctions (www.wikifunctions.org):mediawikiwiki:MediaWiki.org (www.mediawiki.org):wikispecies:Wikispecies (species.wikimedia.org):outreach:Outreach wiki (outreach.wikimedia.org):incubator:Wikimedia Incubator (incubator.wikimedia.org):wikimania:Wikimania wiki (wikimania.wikimedia.org):foundation:Wikimedia Foundation Governance wiki (foundation.wikimedia.org):wikitech:Wikitech (wikitech.wikimedia.org)
Wikimedia chapter wikis
Many Wikimedia chapters have their own wikis. Some examples:
:wmse:Wikimedia Sverige (se.wikimedia.org):wmno:Wikimedia Norge (no.wikimedia.org):wmdk:Wikimedia Danmark (dk.wikimedia.org):wmfi:Wikimedia Suomi (fi.wikimedia.org):wmee:Wikimedia Eesti (ee.wikimedia.org):wmpl:Wikimedia Polska (pl.wikimedia.org):wmnl:Wikimedia Nederland (nl.wikimedia.org):wmuk:Wikimedia UK (wikimedia.org.uk)
Blog posts on Diff
Diff is the Wikimedia community blog. It is not a wiki, but it has its own prefix:
:diffblog:Diff (diff.wikimedia.org)- Example:
:diffblog:2023/10/06/introducing-the-karakalpak-wikipedia-a-new-developing-project/
- Example:
Finding other prefixes
For wikis that are not listed here, see the full list of interwiki prefixes on MediaWiki.org.
Most prefixes in that list lead to sites outside Wikimedia, so they should not be used with these properties. To check a prefix, look at its URL: it should end in wikimedia.org, wikipedia.org or the domain of another Wikimedia project, and point to a /wiki/ page.
